The Pander Brothers: Fabrication/Corrosion

Willamette Week ARTS PICK

Arnold and Jacob Pander have their own careers, but the two also work collaboratively as the Pander Brothers. InFabrication/Corrosion, their first joint gallery show in a decade, they counterpose Arnold’s black-velvet paintings with Jacob’s urban photography. The paintings depict actresses and music superstars like Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus. Arnold’s aim is to critique the tragicomic overexposure of people who are both commanders and victims of the starmaking machine. Jacob’s photographs, printed not on paper but metal, show the sun-bleached billboards that punctuate the city of Los Angeles, as well as stark images of urban decay. Both brothers’ work illustrates the trappings of the Hollywood high life—“trappings” both in the sense of “luxuries” and “cage.” July 19-Sept. 14.
